It was a choral effort. Made by many hands, many wills, many hours spent all together to achieve the goal of expanding the Morifindugu Junior Secondary School , which is now almost finished. The project A School for All was an adventure in which the entire community of Serekolia participated, aware that it is an opportunity for change and improvement, as can be seen from the many voices we have collected. The work is now almost complete: the ecological latrine and the well for drinking water are active; one hundred chairs and one hundred desks have been manufactured and painted and are ready to be used by the new students. In the last few weeks, the men of Serekolia have painted the outside of the building, the window frames in an intense blue, the structure white. It is a great satisfaction for everyone. In Sierra Leone, school dropout rates are
very high. Suffice it to say that in the district of Koinadugu – the one to which the village of Serekolia belongs – it is estimated that only one in six children attends middle school. There are many reasons for abandonment, but there is one that is crucial: schools are very far from villages and children are forced to walk very long distances. Not everyone can do this and those who do run risks by moving away from the protection of their families and communities.
Sierra Leone, final brush strokes for the new school
We are almost finished with the work. The new building of Morifindugu Junior Secondary School in Serekolia gleams with fresh paint. The commitment of an entire community has borne fruit for the many children who will be able to attend the new middle school.
