Ali wounded in war
Ali’s life was turned upside down in an instant when a bullet hit him in the head . The war in Syria has spared nothing to this man: the gunshot caused paralysis on the left side of his body and a speech impediment.
This tragedy also had serious consequences on his family life: with six dependents – his wife and five children – his main concern remained to ensure they had a dignified life.
The first recovery attempt
It was certainly not easy to start over from here, both for Ali himself and for those who live next to him, yet the man relied on a physiotherapy program that allowed him to take a first step towards recovery. Session after session, Ali improved. But not enough.
After the first three weeks of sessions he had made good progress physically, but his mind was not yet capable of looking to the future with optimism after the trauma of the war.
In his work and everyday life, Ali struggled to find a new normal . He needed more than just medical support.
The meeting with Seeds of Hope
Ali turned to the Step Center – a center supported by Seeds of Hope – at the suggestion of the Red Crescent (the Syrian Red Cross). Here he started over and followed an intense rehabilitation program for his back, legs and hands . It was a demanding, hard, tiring two months, but he recovered a good part of his ability to move.
The real change, however, occurred on a psychological level, with targeted assistance: “I started to love my home more, and my children also started to love me more” , she says today with emotion.
What came next is the story of a success for Seeds of Hope : Ali strengthened family ties, rediscovered commitment to work, welcomed the idea of the future. In short, he transformed the tragedy of war into a new opportunity for life.
