Cibitoke: working to reach 35

The second phase of the project that includes the construction of a total of 35 ecological latrines in Burundi has begun

Good news from Cibitoke, Burundi. A few weeks ago we reported on the 12 ecological latrines under construction and almost completed ( here the article ). Now 23 more have been added to the works, for a total of 35 latrines under construction.

What does the project launched in Cibitoke involve?

These works are part of the project Water source of life and development in Cibitoke , which involves the construction of ecological latrines in the three hills of Musenyi, Gicaca and Rukana , located in the municipalities of Mugina and Rugombo in the province of Cibitoke. The works are carried out by CASOBU in collaboration with AMU and thanks to the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (for 20 latrines) and the Emilia Romagna Region (for 15 latrines).

The communities involved in the works

It is a work that involves the communities and makes use of the participation of some local people , with different skills and roles: from construction technicians to local administrators, without forgetting the people who live on these hills and who carefully follow the progress of the works, taking part if necessary.

Statements from the residents of Cibitoke

Like Emu, who said: “I was pleasantly surprised by the visit of the team of technicians and managers. They were able to appreciate the work I am doing, especially the way I laid the bricks. The construction of a total of 35 ecological latrines in the province of Cibitoke (Burundi) They suggested some improvements to me to correct some imperfections in the construction, especially of the stairs.”

Bosco also shared his satisfaction: “When I heard about this project I immediately became interested and actively participated because I am a bricklayer.

Our community contributed materials such as sand and gravel; and provided part of the labor. We thank those who allowed us to achieve all this. Alone, with our limited resources, we could not have done it.”
