Together with the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement and Action for New Families ONLUS (AFN), we have launched an extraordinary fundraiser to support the population of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where conflicts have intensified.
Goma is under siege. Conflicts between the Congolese army and the M23 militia have intensified after rebels killed the governor of the North Kivu region on January 25. A new governor for the region, a general of the local armed forces, has been appointed.
AMU has supported a microcredit project in Goma since 2023. Since February, displaced people fleeing conflicts in other parts of the country have begun to arrive in Goma and AMU has begun to support emergency interventions on the spot, in particular by providing drinking water and hygiene kits to the many displaced people in the city’s refugee camps.
Tension and apprehension are growing over what could happen in the coming days, with the possibility of an escalation of the conflict that could have consequences on a city already exhausted by a civil war that has now lasted for more than thirty years.
AMU renews its commitment to the most vulnerable people in Goma and takes part in the fundraising campaign together with the Emergency Coordination of the Focolare Movement and Action for New Families ONLUS (AFN) .
